pembroke gardens, tenbury wells

Saville Jones were appointed by Stonewater Housing Association to provide a public realm access solution from Pembroke Avenue to their sheltered housing. Pembroke Gardens is located within a Conservation Area and has a green located directly in front of the sheltered housing, approximately 1.5 metres higher than the sheltered housing. Access was provided by a number of steps, which many of the tenants found too challenging due to their limited mobility.

An illuminated access ramp was designed to cross the green and to provide equality of access to residents and visitors alike. Consideration was given to minimise the removal of trees and to the existing buried underground services crossing the site. New banking was necessary over part of the length of the ramp and retaining walls introduced at the bottom of the ramp for soil retention.

The planting scheme contains low maintenance shrubs with all year round interest, including lavenders; rosemary; cotton lavender and evergreen shrubs that benefit residents and encourage pollinating insects. Seating areas were introduced to provide resting places for users limited mobility.
