Saville Jones was appointed by Sport England and the Big Lottery Fund to undertake consultancy work in respect of sports projects funded by these two organisations.

Sport England

The Practice was retained by Sport England for several years, to undertake monitoring work on completed Sport England funded sports projects. The practice covered the whole of the South Zone and undertook visits to projects funded by the National Lottery through Sport England. Each visit involved an assessment of the completed scheme, and interviews with the applicants and their technical advisors, in order to complete a written report on the design, procurement and costs of the project. This brief was later extended to pre-completion inspections under the Space for Sports and Arts programme. This work involved a similar process, but visiting the scheme part-way through construction to ensure that the finished project conformed to the design and detail previously approved by Sport England and to raise any concerns about quality and design. A further development of this work with Sport England was to undertake initial assessment work on the Space for Sports and Arts programme. This has required the Practice to assess the design of the projects prior to any award being made.

The Big Lottery Fund

The Practice was employed by the Big Lottery Fund to undertake design and technical assessments of projects submitted for funding under the PE and Sport programme. Designs were assessed for compliance with published Sport England Design Guidance and with accepted good practice. Assessment reports were returned to applicants and further assessments completed once matters of concern had been addressed. Following the granting of an award, the practice was involved in the grant management process, providing further advice to the BLF on design and cost related issues to ensure that schemes maintained a high standard.
